Which Newquay beach for which wind?

Wind decides whether a wave is clean or chopped up. Offshore wind blows from the land out over the beach into the face of the wave and holds it up; cross-shore blows along the beach; onshore blows in from the sea and breaks the wave up. Each Newquay beach faces a different way, so the best beach changes with the wind. Most face west or north west, so a west or north west wind is onshore at nearly all of them; the clean days tend to come with an easterly or southerly wind.

This is worked out from the way each beach faces, the same rule the live surf report uses, for a moderate wind of about 12 mph. A headland can shelter a beach from some winds, which the live report takes into account.
