A guide, not a lifeguard
The surf calls, the Cribbar watch, the crowd line and “was it on” are worked out from forecasts and from what people tell us. Forecasts get it wrong. Nothing in this app tells you the sea is safe.
The app is learning all the time: “Was it on?” answers nudge the surf calls for that beach, tide and wind. It only learns from many answers over several days, and it never turns a poor call into a good one.
- Look at the sea yourself before you go in, and know your limits.
- Swim and bodyboard between the red and yellow flags, and do what the RNLI lifeguards tell you.
- In an emergency at the coast, ring 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
- Tide times are not for navigation.
Listings and events
We check opening times, phone numbers and events where we can, but places change. Anything marked “worth checking” is exactly that. Run somewhere listed here and want something changed or taken off? Use the form at the bottom of What’s on and it is done, no questions.
What we keep about you
No accounts, no adverts, no tracking cookies. That is most of it. The rest:
- Visits. GoatCounter counts page views without cookies or personal data. Our own counter keeps a count per town per day, and per kind of device (iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac) and whether the app is installed. Never your address or anything that picks out your device.
- On your phone only. Your surf log (with the tide, wind and size at the time), favourite beaches and settings are saved in your browser and never sent to us. Clear the site’s data and they are gone.
- Surf alerts. If you turn them on we keep your phone’s push address, the beaches you picked and the kind of device it is (iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac), only to send those alerts and count them. Turn them off and it is deleted.
- “Was it on?” answers. Kept with the beach and the sea at the time. Nothing about who you are.
- Feed the Gods. The name you type and your score show on the public board, so use a nickname.
- The contact form. Your name, how to reach you and your message come to us through our host, Netlify, so we can reply. Nothing else is done with them.
Questions about your data, or want something removed? Use the same form. If you are not happy with our answer you can go to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
