    Best Newquay beaches for beginners

Most Newquay beaches suit a beginner on the right day, and none of them suit one on the wrong day. What matters is a small, clean wave, a wind that is not blowing into the beach, and somewhere with room and a lifeguard when the season has them.

The list below comes from the beach guides on each beach page. The live surf report tells you which of them is small and clean right now: look for a green or yellow beach with a small wave, not a red one.

    Beaches that suit beginners

Crantock. Suits: All levels in the middle of the beach; the Bowgie corner is a locals’ spot. Crowd: Usually quiet. Watch out for: A long paddle and strong rips in a bigger swell. Never wade the Gannel. The water can be poor after heavy rain.

Towan. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Busy when it is breaking, plus surf schools. Watch out for: Rocks and the harbour end. No real channel, so a lot of paddling. Loose boards.

Great Western. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Usually quiet; busier in summer and when a winter storm closes the open beaches. Watch out for: The beach shrinks fast as the tide comes in.

Lusty Glaze. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Usually quiet. Watch out for: Cliffs all round. Check the tide before walking round from Tolcarne.

Porth. Suits: Beginners, best when small. Crowd: Quiet. Watch out for: A rip by the river mouth, worse on spring tides after rain.

Watergate Bay. Suits: Beginners to intermediate; bigger days are a hard paddle out. Crowd: Room for everyone; busier in summer and at weekends. Watch out for: The tide reaches the cliffs at high water, so you can be cut off. Rips in a bigger swell.

Mawgan Porth. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Quieter than town. Watch out for: Rips, even between the flags, in a big swell on big tides.

Better left until you have more experience

Fistral (intermediate to advanced; surf schools use it on small days); South Fistral (intermediate to advanced); Little Fistral (advanced surfers only); Tolcarne (the Wedge is for experienced surfers and bodyboarders; easier away from it).

    Before you go in

Lifeguard cover is seasonal and changes at short notice, so check the flags and the RNLI before you go in, and never go alone. Our beach guides come from published guides and local knowledge: sandbanks move, so check the sea first. Take the wind direction into account: a beginner wants it offshore or light.
