Great Western, Newquay: surf report and beach guide

Live surf, wind and tide for Great Western, worked out through the day and ranked against the other Newquay beaches.

A quiet pocket of sand under the hotel, joined to Towan and Tolcarne once the tide drops. Dogs all year. Steps down, no car park, and it goes to almost nothing at high water.

RNLI lifeguards roughly 16 May to 27 September, usually 10am to 6pm; the RNLI publishes exact dates each spring.

    Dogs all year.

No car park at the beach.

    Surf guide

Where on the beach: The small bay right of the Island, towards the hotel. Towan is the long beach on the other side. The Northshore cam looks along it to Towan. Best swell: W to NW, and it needs a big one to get in. Best wind: S, offshore. Best tide: anything but high water; it depends a lot on the swell. The wave: Small, sheltered lefts and rights. Bottom: Sand. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Usually quiet; busier in summer and when a winter storm closes the open beaches. Watch out for: The beach shrinks fast as the tide comes in. Boards: Longboard, funboard or foamie. On the beach: Steps down from Cliff Road; the town above.

Rips. Nothing published for this beach, which is not the same as nothing there. Ask the lifeguards.no source found, September 2026
