Watergate Bay, Newquay: surf report and beach guide

Live surf, wind and tide for Watergate Bay, worked out through the day and ranked against the other Newquay beaches.

Two miles of sand, lifeguards April to November, a big car park and somewhere to eat. It takes a crowd without feeling like one.

RNLI lifeguards roughly 1 April to 2 November, usually 10am to 6pm; the RNLI publishes exact dates each spring.

    Dogs all year.

Parking: Watergate Bay, council, 2 min, over the road.

    Surf guide

Best swell: W, works SW to NW. Best wind: ESE, offshore. Best tide: mid tide up to just off high; mid is a reliable starting point. The wave: Two miles of beach break, lefts and rights. Bottom: Sand. Suits: Beginners to intermediate; bigger days are a hard paddle out. Crowd: Room for everyone; busier in summer and at weekends. Watch out for: The tide reaches the cliffs at high water, so you can be cut off. Rips in a bigger swell. Boards: Anything, longboard to shortboard. On the beach: Toilets, showers, surf school and shop, food, lifeguards, big car park.

Rips. Five people were rescued and ten more helped inside fifteen minutes in June 2018, on a low tide starting to push in, after swimmers drifted out of the flagged area.RNLI, June 2018
