Where on the beach: The long beach, from the harbour end to the Island. Great Western is the small bay right of the Island. Best swell: W to NW, and it needs some size to get in. Best wind: S, offshore. Best tide: mid tide, best on the drop or the early push. The wave: Short, fast lefts and rights. Can be hollow, often closes out. Bottom: Sand, with rock showing near high tide. Suits: Beginners to intermediate. Crowd: Busy when it is breaking, plus surf schools. Watch out for: Rocks and the harbour end. No real channel, so a lot of paddling. Loose boards. Boards: Anything; a longboard or foamie on the small days. On the beach: Toilets, lifeguards in season, surf school and shop, the town.
