Crantock, Newquay: surf report and beach guide

Live surf, wind and tide for Crantock, worked out through the day and ranked against the other Newquay beaches.

Huge run of sand and dunes, and it empties out as you walk west. No facilities to speak of, and the Gannel at the far end is not to be waded.

RNLI lifeguards roughly 1 May to 2 November, usually 10am to 6pm; the RNLI publishes exact dates each spring.

Dogs welcome all year on most of the beach, worth checking.

Parking: Crantock Beach car park, National Trust, 5 min across the dunes, worth checking.

    Surf guide

Best swell: W, works SW to NW. Best wind: ENE, offshore. Best tide: low to mid tide. The wave: Beach break, lefts and rights, with a peak by the Gannel mouth and another in the Bowgie corner. Bottom: Sand. Suits: All levels in the middle of the beach; the Bowgie corner is a locals’ spot. Crowd: Usually quiet. Watch out for: A long paddle and strong rips in a bigger swell. Never wade the Gannel. The water can be poor after heavy rain. Boards: Anything, longboard to shortboard. On the beach: Lifeguards in season; little else on the sand.

Rips. Three spots. The mouth of the Gannel at the north end, the middle of the beach where the river channel moves, and the south end by the rocks below Bowgie. The channel shifts, so where the danger sits changes between visits.Crantock Surf Life Saving Club, July 2026
